Judging Explanation
So how are the MAVRIC Award recipients decided?
The first step is to listen to every single song submitted. In 2007, we listened
to nearly 400 songs. In 2008, that number increased to over 1,500
songs! From this, our staff chooses the nominees and sends out the
announcements.
Here’s where the fun begins. In order to make this a fair consideration
of the submissions and give true merit to the awards, we have come up with
a three tiered judging system. Sort of the ‘judging trinity’ if
you will…
Three separate groups will judge most of the categories: An expert in the
field of music being considered, a person who is in the music industry, and
fans.
Expert: This is a person with extensive knowledge of the
category which he or she will be judging. For example, for a person judging
Jazz Song of the Year, we will look to have a person who is a professional
Jazz musician, a Jazz club owner, a record company with Jazz as its focus,
etc…
Music Industry Person: This is a person who works in the
music industry. A booker at a nightclub, a studio engineer or producer, a
radio representative, a music store owner, a musician, etc…
Fans: This is anyone who likes music and has access to vote
in our online voting process. Only one vote will be counted per person.
Each of the three groups are given a weighted importance to the final accumulation
of votes. The Expert will have 45% of the weight, the Music Industry Person
will have 35%, and the Fans will receive 20%.
Sound like fun? Confused yet? Trust us, it all works out and it gives everyone
a voice in a blending of the most honest and merited way we know.
Believe in the power of the Independent Musician.
